What Your Austin Trees Need in August Before Fall Arrives

August is the hardest month of the year for Austin trees. Cumulative heat stress, depleted soil moisture, and months without meaningful rainfall compound into the conditions most likely to push a tree from stressed to declining. But August is also the last month before temperatures begin their gradual retreat in September — and what you do right now has a direct impact on how quickly and completely your trees recover when cooler weather arrives. Here’s where to focus your energy.

Maintain Deep Irrigation Through the End of August

Do not ease off irrigation in August even if temperatures moderate slightly or you get a light rain. A quarter-inch of rain does not meaningfully recharge soil moisture at the root zone depths that matter for established trees. Keep your deep watering schedule consistent through the end of the month. The transition to fall watering — reduced frequency as temperatures drop and tree water demand decreases — should happen gradually in September, not abruptly in August.

Check and Refresh Mulch

Wood chip mulch applied in spring has been doing heavy work all summer — moderating soil temperature, reducing evaporation, and slowly breaking down into the soil. By August, the layer may have compacted or thinned. Rake it gently to break up any compacted surface crust and check the depth. If it’s under two inches in any area, top it off. This small investment in mulch material pays significant dividends through August’s final heat and into the fall root growth season.

What to Document Now

Walk your property and photograph any trees showing dieback, unusual bark conditions, fungal growth, or structural changes. Note which trees look significantly different than they did in May. This documentation creates a baseline for fall assessment and gives you — and any arborist you consult — a clear picture of how the summer progressed. Trees that declined significantly during summer often benefit from fall intervention — fertilization, structural pruning, or treatment — timed to coincide with the onset of cooler temperatures and the fall root growth flush.

Schedule Fall Work Now

Why August Is the Right Time to Book

October and November are the busiest months for tree services in Austin — the optimal planting and structural pruning window, combined with post-summer assessment demand, means schedules fill quickly. If you want an arborist on your property in the fall window, scheduling in August gets you the dates you want. At Agave Tree Services, fall is when we do some of our most important work — structural pruning before winter storms, new plantings timed for maximum establishment, and deep root fertilization to fuel the fall root growth season. Reach out now to get on the schedule while there’s still good availability.
