Preparing Your Austin Trees for Summer: A June Action Plan

June is a hinge month in Austin. The temperatures that arrive in the next few weeks will stay for months, and the trees that go into summer well-prepared come out the other side in dramatically better shape than those that don’t. If you’ve been meaning to do something about your trees and haven’t yet, this is the window. Here’s what actually needs to happen before July arrives.

Mulch Now If You Haven’t

It’s Not Too Late, But It’s Getting Close

A three- to four-inch layer of wood chip mulch over the root zone is the single most impactful thing you can do before summer heat peaks. It dramatically reduces soil moisture evaporation, moderates root zone temperature, and suppresses the grass and weeds competing with your trees for water. June is still an effective time to apply or refresh mulch — you’ll see the benefit all summer. Pull it back from the trunk, spread it wide to the drip line, and leave it alone.

Establish a Watering Plan for New Trees

The First Two Summers Are Make or Break

If you planted anything in the last twelve to eighteen months, now is the time to lock in a watering schedule and stick to it. New trees in Austin need supplemental water every seven to ten days through the summer, applied slowly and deeply to the root ball and the surrounding zone. Mark it on your calendar, set a recurring phone reminder, assign it to someone — whatever it takes. A tree lost to summer drought in year one or two is a complete waste of the planting investment.

Assess Before You Prune

July Is Your Oak Pruning Window

June falls inside the oak wilt transmission window, so no pruning on live oaks or Texas red oaks this month. If you have structural work that needs to happen on oaks — deadwood removal, co-dominant stem reduction, weight-loaded lateral branches — schedule it for July. Arborists book up fast in July when the transmission risk drops, so making that call now puts you in a better position than scrambling mid-summer.

Non-Oak Trees Can Be Pruned Now for Hazard Removal

Cedar elms, pecans, crape myrtles, and other non-oak species can be pruned now if there are genuine hazards — hanging branches, obvious deadwood over occupied areas, storm damage from spring. Limit summer pruning to what’s necessary and leave structural work for the dormant season. Avoid heavy pruning on visibly drought-stressed trees.

Schedule a Health Assessment While You Still Have Options

Problems Caught in June Are Easier to Address Than Problems Caught in August

A tree that’s borderline stressed going into summer can tip into serious decline by mid-July if conditions are harsh. A professional assessment now — identifying soil issues, early disease signs, structural concerns, or drought stress — gives you time to act before the worst of summer arrives. At Agave Tree Services, we offer tree health assessments across Austin and the surrounding area. If you have a tree you’ve been watching, June is the time to stop watching and start doing something about it.
