Fall Tree Planting in Austin: Why October Is the Best Month to Plant

Most people think of spring as planting season — the time when garden centers overflow and neighborhoods fill with freshly installed landscapes. But for trees in Austin, fall is actually the superior planting window, and October specifically is the single best month to put a new tree in the ground. Understanding why helps you make better planting decisions and gives your investment the best possible start.

Why Fall Beats Spring for Tree Planting

Root Growth Without Heat Stress

When you plant a tree in October, soil temperatures are still warm enough — typically in the 65 to 75 degree range — to support active root growth, but air temperatures have retreated enough that the tree isn’t simultaneously managing summer heat stress. The result is a six to eight week window of root establishment before the tree goes dormant for winter, followed by an additional root growth flush in early spring before temperatures climb again. A tree planted in October arrives at its first summer with significantly more established root mass than one planted the previous spring.

Spring-Planted Trees Go Straight Into Summer

A tree planted in March or April in Austin has roughly six to eight weeks before summer heat arrives in force. That’s rarely enough time to establish the root system needed to handle Austin’s summer independently. Spring-planted trees often struggle through their first summer and require intensive supplemental irrigation. Many die during that first summer when irrigation lapses. Fall-planted trees have had months of root establishment before facing their first summer test.

What to Plant This Fall

Native and Adapted Species for Long-Term Success

Live oak is the gold standard for large shade trees in Austin — long-lived, drought-tolerant once established, and culturally iconic. Cedar elm is the best choice for challenging sites with poor soil, overhead utilities, or constrained root zones. Texas red oak offers spectacular fall color and faster growth than live oak. Mexican sycamore provides fast shade with beautiful exfoliating bark but needs more water than native oaks. Chinquapin oak is an underused gem for well-drained sites in full sun. For smaller ornamental trees, Desert willow, Texas mountain laurel, and Eve’s necklace are excellent native choices that provide seasonal interest without outgrowing their spaces.

Sizing and Spacing Decisions That Matter Long-Term

The single most important decision in any tree planting is choosing a species sized appropriately for the available space. A live oak needs 40 to 60 feet of horizontal clearance to develop its mature canopy — plant it too close to a structure or property line and you’re creating an expensive conflict that compounds over decades. When in doubt, go smaller on species. A cedar elm or chinquapin oak in the right spot will outlast and outperform a live oak planted too close to a building.

Planning Your Fall Planting Now

October is six weeks away, and the best trees at local nurseries sell out quickly once fall planting season opens. Now is the right time to identify your planting sites, decide on species, and arrange for installation. At Agave Tree Services, we can help you select and install the right trees for your specific property conditions — soil type, light exposure, available space, and long-term goals. A tree planted correctly this fall will be providing shade, privacy, and ecological value for decades.
