Summer Tree Care Checklist for Austin Homeowners

Austin summers are among the most demanding conditions trees face anywhere in the United States. Triple-digit heat, months without meaningful rainfall, soils that bake into concrete, and sudden violent storms create a gauntlet that even well-adapted native trees struggle to navigate. The good news is that a few consistent practices between May and September make an enormous difference in how your trees come out the other side. Here’s your practical summer checklist.

Water: Deep and Infrequent

Established Trees

Established trees — in the ground three or more years — generally don’t need irrigation during a normal Austin summer. During extended drought, a deep watering once or twice a month at the drip line is sufficient and far preferable to frequent shallow irrigation. Watch for early-morning wilting and early leaf drop as actual drought stress signals, not midday heat wilt which is normal even in healthy trees.

New Trees

Newly planted trees need consistent supplemental irrigation every seven to ten days through at least their first two summers, applied slowly to the root ball and surrounding zone. Missing irrigation during a heat wave in the first or second summer is the most common cause of tree loss in Austin. Set a calendar reminder and stick to it regardless of how the tree looks.

Mulch: Refresh Before Peak Heat

Check Depth and Coverage in May

Before temperatures climb above 95 degrees consistently, walk each tree and check your mulch depth and coverage. You want three to four inches of wood chip mulch extending to the drip line, pulled back from the trunk. If last year’s mulch has decomposed below two inches, add a fresh layer now. This single action dramatically reduces soil moisture loss and root zone temperature through the summer months.

Watch for Stress Signals

What Normal Summer Stress Looks Like

Some leaf scorch — browning at leaf margins — is normal on many Austin trees during extreme heat events. Midday wilting that recovers by evening is also normal and not a cause for action. Early morning wilting that doesn’t recover, leaves dropping in July or August before seasonal timing, and significant tip dieback are genuine stress signals worth addressing.

What’s Worth a Call to an Arborist

Sudden wilting across the whole canopy, rapid canopy dieback from the top down, new fungal growth at the base, or any sudden lean or soil heaving warrant a professional assessment. Summer is when trees under chronic stress from poor soil, compaction, or disease often hit a tipping point. Catching the problem while options still exist is almost always cheaper than managing a crisis. At Agave Tree Services, we’re available through summer for hazard assessments and emergency response.
